Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Mike Ruth

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: Boston College

POSITION: Nose Guard

YEARS: 1982-85

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: The 1985 Outland Trophy winner, Ruth helped Boston College appear in three bowl games, including a victory in the 1985 Cotton Bowl and a final No. 5 ranking for the 1984 season. A three-time All-East and All-ECAC selection, he led BC to back-to-back Lambert Trophies in 1983-94. Ruth amassed 344 career tackles, including 29 sacks and contributed seven forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in his career. He was named the 1986 Eagle of the Year, the highest honor bestowed to a Boston College athlete.

POST-COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CAREER: Drafted by New England in second round of 1986 NFL Draft, he played two seasons in the NFL with the Patriots. He also spent two seasons with Barcelona Dragons in World League of American Football.

NOTABLES: Named to BC’s Varsity Club Hall of Fame. Ruth considered joining the priesthood while attending Boston College.
