Hall of Fame Candidate Capsule: Vinny Testaverde

Leading in to the announcement of the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation highlights members on the Hall of Fame Ballot. The 2012 Class will be announced on May 15 in New York City.

SCHOOL: Miami (Fla.)

POSITION: Quarterback

YEARS: 1982, 1984-86

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS: A unanimous First Team All-American, Testaverde won virtually every award possible in 1986, claiming the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, and the UPI Player of the Year award. He led the Hurricanes to three consecutive New Year’s Day bowls and a 47-13 record. Testaverde totaled 6,058 yards, 48 touchdown passes, and a 61.3 completion percentage. He matched George Mira’s school record of 116 consecutive passes without an interception and threw at least one touchdown pass in 19-of-21 career starts.   

POST-COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CAREER: Drafted as the first overall pick of the 1987 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Testaverde played with seven teams in 21 seasons. Twice named a Pro Bowl selection and named 1998 All-Pro selection, he finished his NFL career ranked seventh all-time in passing yards (46,233) and eighth in touchdown passes (275).

NOTABLES: Testaverde is only the fourth player in Miami football history to have his number retired. He was recommended  to the Hall of Fame by coaches Howard Schnellenberger and Jimmy Johnson as well as College Football Hall of Famer Gino Torretta.
