Wayne Harris, a 2004 College Football Hall of Fame inductee from the University of Arkansas, passed away June 4. He was 77 years old.

Born in Hampton, Ark., on May 4, 1938, Harris claimed High School All-American at El Dorado High School in Arkansas.  A supreme blocker on offense and a fierce tackler on defense, he earned the nickname "Thumper" for his punishing hits. A First Team All-America selection, Harris set an Arkansas single-season record for tackles with 174 in 1960, and he helped the Razorbacks win back-to-back Southwest Conference championships in 1959 and 1960 during College Football Hall of Fame coach Frank Broyles' second and third seasons as head coach.

A two-time First Team All-Conference selection, he was named Southwest Conference Player of the Year in 1960. A team captain, he received the Crip Hall Award for an outstanding performance as a senior. A true scholar-athlete, Harris was named a First Team Academic All-American in 1959, and he twice earned First Team Academic All-Conference honors.

Harris had made Calgary his home in 1961 when he began playing in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played 12 seasons with the Stampeders, and he was an 11-time Western Conference All-Star. Harris was named MVP of the Grey Cup in the Stampeders' 14-11 victory over Toronto in 1971. He also played in the Grey Cup in 1968 and 1970.

After his playing days, Harris worked as an executive for an oil and gas company, retiring from the business in 2008. He is also a member of the CFL Hall of Fame, the State of Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and the UA Hall of Honor. His son, Wayne Jr., is now the head football coach at the University of Calgary.
