Steve Eisenhauer, a 1994 College Football Hall of Fame inductee from the U.S. Naval Academy passed away May 1 in Winchester, Va. He was 84.
Born Dec. 1, 1931, in Sheffield, Pa., Eisenhauer graduated from Sheffield High School (Pa.) and attended the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1954. He married
Barbara Ritchie in June 1954.
While at the Naval Academy, Steve was an outstanding student-athlete. As a tackle and guard at Navy, he was named a First Team All-American in 1952 and 1953. He was also was named an Academic All-American, and in 1992 he was named to the Academic All-America Hall of Fame.
His first assignment was Officer Basic School in Quantico, Va., before entering flight school at NAS Pensacola, Fla. He began his career as a fighter pilot with Marine Fighter Squadron 235 at Cherry Point, N.C. Eisenhauer then served as Aide to
Maj. Gen. Marion Dawson in Korea.
He later served at MCAS El Toro, Calif., before entering the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif. He returned to MCAS El Toro before deploying to Vietnam, where he served as an operations officer from 1966-67 and flew 120 combat missions. Home from Vietnam, he served at Headquarters Marine Corps in Arlington, Va. While there, he earned a master's degree in statistics at George Washington University and authored a research paper providing the basis for Congressional approval of funding for the Children's Head Start Program.
Among his military decorations are the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "v" and the Air Medal with 8 Gold Stars.
After retiring from the Marine Corps in 1975 with the rank of lieutenant colonel, Eisenhauer served as a civilian consultant working with Naval Air until 1996. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the U. S. Naval Academy Foundation, the Naval Academy Alumni Association, the Shenandoah Area Naval Academy Alumni Group and the Retired Officers Association.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years,
Barbara Eisenhauer, and their two children,
Susan Eisenhauer Kessell and her husband
Frederick of Lake Wylie, S.C., and
Gregory Stephen Eisenhauer and his wife
Elizabeth of Winchester, Va., along with two grandchildren.
