Cade McNown Set for Oct. 23 NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute, Presented by Fidelity Investments

UCLA and the National Football Foundation will jointly honor McNown, a member of the 2020 College Football Hall of Fame Class, when the Bruins host Oregon.

IRVING, Texas (Oct. 20, 2021) – UCLA and The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced today that they will jointly honor 2020 College Football Hall of Fame electee Cade McNown with an NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute, presented by Fidelity Investments. The Salute will take place this Saturday, Oct. 23, during the Bruins' home football game against Oregon. Coverage of the game will start at 12:30 p.m. PT on ABC.

"I don't feel worthy," said McNown. "It's amazing to be included alongside an incredible class with many people who I watched and admired. As you go through previous classes and what it means to be a part of it, I really don't have words. I truly feel like the only reason it is happening is the result of all the things that my teammates, coaches and administrators did, including my high school coaches and teammates. It's incredible not just for me but for all those people."

The NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute program, which began with the inaugural College Football Hall of Fame Class in 1951, has become a hallowed tradition, and to this day the singular events remain the first of numerous activities in the Hall of Fame experience.

During the NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes, each electee returns to his respective school to accept a Hall of Fame plaque that will stay on permanent display at the institution. The events take place on the field during a home game, and many Hall of Famers cite the experience as the ultimate capstone to their careers, providing them one more chance to take the field and be recognized in front of their home crowd.

The 2020 and 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Classes will be officially inducted during the 63rd NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas Dec. 7 at the ARIA Resort & Casino Las Vegas. (The 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19.)

"At a school with a long line of College Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks, Cade McNown left his mark as UCLA's all-time leading passer," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "We are thrilled to honor him at the Rose Bowl."

A consensus First Team All-American in 1998, McNown took home the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and finished third for the Heisman Trophy after a stellar senior campaign. The 1998 Pac-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Year and Davey O'Brien Award finalist racked up 3,470 passing yards and 3,652 total offensive yards that year – both single-season records at the time.

The senior team captain and UCLA offensive MVP was named the National Quarterback of the Year by the Quarterback Club of Washington D.C. and the Pop Warner Award recipient as the top player on the West Coast. McNown led the Bruins to the 1998 Pac-10 title, a No. 8 final ranking and a berth in the 1999 Rose Bowl, where he set a school bowl record with 340 passing yards. His 513 passing yards in a shootout loss to Miami (FL) remains a UCLA single-game record.

McNown remains UCLA's all-time leader with 10,708 passing yards and 1,250 passing attempts while his 11,285 yards of total offense and 68 touchdown passes both rank second in the school record books. As a junior, he guided UCLA to a share of the Pac-10 title while leading the nation in passing efficiency. The 1997 Bruins would finish the season with a No. 5 national ranking after a win over Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl in which McNown would earn Offensive MVP honors.

He boasts 11 games with 300 yards passing, the second most in Bruins history, and he led the team to a 20-game winning streak during his junior and senior seasons. He played for College Football Hall of Fame coach Terry Donahue during his freshman season in 1995, and he is the only player in school history to start at quarterback in four straight wins over archrival Southern California. McNown is a member of both the UCLA Athletics and Rose Bowl halls of fame.

The 12th overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft, McNown played four seasons in the pros with the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers.

McNown entered the financial sector after his football career, and he is currently a senior managing director for Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors in Los Angeles where he is responsible for business development and client relations. He serves on the advisory board for West Coast Sports Associates and the board of directors for Friends of Golf while participating on various committees at the California Club.

He has also volunteered at the California Showcase, an event sponsored by the NFF and founded by the late Coach Donahue that gives unsigned high school football players an opportunity to try out for divisional college football programs and earn scholarships.

McNown becomes the 13th Bruin player in the College Football Hall of Fame, joining Troy Aikman (1987-88), Gary Beban (1965-67), Randy Cross (1973-75), Kenny Easley (1977-80), Tom Fears (1942, 1946-47), Billy Kilmer (1958-60), Donn Moomaw (1950-52), Jonathan Ogden (1992-95), Jerry Robinson (1975-78), John Sciarra (1972-75), Al Sparlis (1941-42, 1945) and Kenny Washington (1937-39).

Three former UCLA coaches are also in the Hall: Terry Donahue (1976-95), Tommy Prothro (1965-70) and Red Sanders (1949-57).

The 2020 College Football Hall of Fame Class includes Lomas Brown (Florida), Keith Byars (Ohio State), Eric Crouch (Nebraska), Eric Dickerson (SMU), Glenn Dorsey (LSU), John "Jumbo" Elliott (Michigan), Jason Hanson (Washington State), E.J. Henderson (Maryland), E.J. Junior (Alabama), Steve McNair (Alcorn State), Cade McNown (UCLA), Leslie O'Neal (Oklahoma State), Anthony Poindexter (Virginia), David Pollack (Georgia), Bob Stein (Minnesota), Michael Westbrook (Colorado), Elmo Wright (Houston) and coaches Dick Sheridan (Furman, North Carolina State), and Andy Talley (St. Lawrence [NY], Villanova).

The 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Class includes Harris Barton (North Carolina), David Fulcher (Arizona State), Dan Morgan (Miami [FL]), Carson Palmer (Southern California), Tony Romo (Eastern Illinois), Kenneth Sims (Texas), C.J. Spiller (Clemson), Darren Sproles (Kansas State), Aaron Taylor (Notre Dame), Andre Tippett (Iowa), Al Wilson (Tennessee) and coaches Rudy Hubbard (Florida A&M) and Bob Stoops (Oklahoma).

The accomplishments of both classes will be forever immortalized at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, and each inductee will receive a custom ring created by Jostens, the official and exclusive supplier of NFF rings.

Including the 2020 and 2021 Hall of Fame Classes, only 1,038 players and 223 coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame from the nearly 5.47 million who have played or coached the game during the past 152 years. In other words, less than two one-hundredths of a percent (.02%) of the individuals who have played the game have earned this distinction.
