IRVING, Texas (Nov. 9, 2021) – The University of Iowa and The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced today that they will jointly honor 2021 College Football Hall of Fame electee
Andre Tippett with an NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute, presented by Fidelity Investments. The Salute will take place this Saturday, Nov. 13, during the Hawkeyes' home football game against Minnesota. Coverage of the game will start at 2:30 p.m. CT on BTN.
"It is an unbelievable honor, not everybody gets that opportunity," Tippett said after the announcement in January. "The College Football Hall of Fame, like the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is the highest honor you can get, especially after being out of college football for as long as I have. It's impressive and it is a great honor."
The NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute program, which began with the inaugural College Football Hall of Fame Class in 1951, has become a hallowed tradition, and to this day the singular events remain the first of numerous activities in the Hall of Fame experience.
During the NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes, each electee returns to his respective school to accept a Hall of Fame plaque that will stay on permanent display at the institution. The events take place on the field during a home game, and many Hall of Famers cite the experience as the ultimate capstone to their careers, providing them one more chance to take the field and be recognized in front of their home crowd.
The 2020 and 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Classes will be officially inducted during the 63rd NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas Dec. 7 at the ARIA Resort & Casino Las Vegas. (The 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19.)
"Andre Tippett was a terror to offensive backfields and guided Iowa to its first Big Ten title in over two decades," said NFF President & CEO
Steve Hatchell. "We are thrilled to honor him at Kinnick Stadium."
A consensus First Team All-American in 1981, Tippett led Iowa to a share of the Big Ten title and a berth in the 1982 Rose Bowl, the program's first appearance in the game since 1958. The two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection (1980 and 1981) led the conference with 20 tackles for loss during his junior season.
A senior team captain, Tippett holds the Iowa single-season record for tackles for loss yardage with 153 yards on 20 TFL in 1980. Part of the Hawkeyes' initial success under College Football Hall of Fame Coach
Hayden Fry, he helped the 1981 team finish with a No. 18 ranking and an 8-4 record, ending a streak of 19 consecutive losing seasons.
A member of Iowa's All-Time Team, Tippett was also elected to the National Iowa Varsity Club Hall of Fame. While at Iowa, he was teammates with
Bob Stoops, a fellow 2021 College Football Hall of Fame electee for his time as Oklahoma's head coach.
A second-round selection in the 1982 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, Tippett played his entire pro career with the franchise from 1982-93. The five-time Pro Bowler and 1985 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is the Patriots' all-time sacks leader and guided the team to an appearance in Super Bowl XX. Tippett is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the New England Patriots Hall of Fame.
A Pop Warner football coach for seven years, Tippett also served on the organization's board of directors. A certified sixth degree black belt in Uechi-ryu karate, he has studied martial arts for over three decades.
Involved in community outreach throughout the Massachusetts region since his NFL career began, Tippett currently serves as the executive director of community affairs for the New England Patriots.
