NFF National Scholar-Athletes Earn 2021 Academic All-America Honors

CoSIDA announced the 2021-22 Academic All-America® Division I football teams on Wednesday, Dec. 15, and the list featured six 2021 NFF National Scholar-Athletes and three 2020 NFF National Scholar-Athletes (all three returned for their extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic).

2021 William V. Campbell Trophy® recipient Charlie Kolar (Iowa State) was named the 2021-22 CoSIDA Academic All-America Team Member of the Year for Division I football. Kolar was a Mackey Award finalist for the second straight season, and he was the only unanimous First Team All-Big 12 selection in 2021. This season, Kolar is second at Iowa State and ranks fifth in the Big 12 with 723 receiving yards while being tied for the team lead and being tied for fifth in the conference with five receiving touchdowns. 

Kolar becomes the first three-time First Team Academic All-American in Iowa State history, having previosuly been honored in 2020 and 2019. He graduated summa cum laude in December 2020 with a 3.99 GPA in mechanical engineering while ranking in the highest two percent of engineering students at the university.

2021 NFF National Scholar-Athletes Troy Andersen (Montana State), Thomas Booker (Stanford), Patrick Fields (Oklahoma), Matt Henningsen (Wisconsin) and Aidan Hutchinson (Michigan) were all named First Team Academic All-Americans. This marks the second straight season that Booker and Henningsen were named First Team Academic All-Americans while Fields was previously a Second Team Academic All-American in 2020. Andersen and Hutchinson are being honored as Academic All-Americans for the first time.

From the 2020 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, Jack Gibbens (Minnesota - honored by NFF at Abilene Christian) and  Kekaula Kaniho (Boise State) were selected as First Team Academic All-Americans while Ezra Gray (Alabama State) earned Second Team Academic All-America honors. Gibbens was previously a First Team Academic All-American at Abilene Christian in 2019 while Kaniho earned first team honors in 2020 and second team recognition in 2019. Gray was previously a First Team Academic All-American in 2020 and 2019.

The Division II, Division III and NAIA Academic All-America Teams will be announced later this week.
