MacArthur Bowl Recipients
Biography
Pac-10 Champion Washington defeated Big Ten Champion Michigan in the Rose Bowl, marking the Huskies’ first MacArthur Bowl. Coached by College Football Hall of Famer Don James, Washington finished 12-0 after a 34-14 victory against the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl. The Huskies completed their first undefeated season since 1916. The 1991 Washington team featured Hall of Fame defensive end Steve Emtman and Hall of Fame offensive tackle Lincoln Kennedy. The Huskies also fielded 1993 NFF National Scholar-Athlete and center Jim Nevelle.
Representing the pinnacle of team achievement in college sports, the trophy was the gift of an anonymous donor, who commissioned Tiffany & Co. to craft it from 400 ounces of silver, in honor of NFF founder General Douglas A. MacArthur. It took eight months to make, and the trophy features MacArthur's famous quote: "There is no substitute for victory."
