MacArthur Bowl Recipients
Biography
SEC Champion Florida defeated ACC Champion Florida State in the Sugar Bowl, marking the Gators’ first MacArthur Bowl. Coached by Steve Spurrier, a College Football Hall of Famer as both a coach and a player, Florida finished 12-1 after a 52-20 victory against the Seminoles in the Sugar Bowl. Hall of Fame quarterback Danny Wuerffel took home plenty of hardware, receiving the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, Davey O’Brien Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and William V. Campbell Trophy.
Representing the pinnacle of team achievement in college sports, the trophy was the gift of an anonymous donor, who commissioned Tiffany & Co. to craft it from 400 ounces of silver, in honor of NFF founder General Douglas A. MacArthur. It took eight months to make, and the trophy features MacArthur's famous quote: "There is no substitute for victory."
