MacArthur Bowl Recipients
Biography
Florida, the 2008 SEC Champions, defeated Oklahoma, the 2008 Big 12 Champions, marking the Gators' third national title (1996, 2006, & 2008) since the school started playing football in 1906. Florida last claimed the MacArthur Bowl and the national championship two years ago after the 2006 season under coach Meyer by toppling Ohio State, 41-14, in the 2007 Tostitos BCS National Championship in Glendale, Ariz. Coach Meyer becomes the first coach to win two BCS National titles, and the Gators join LSU as the only teams to win two BCS National Championships since the system was developed in 1998.
With the score tied, 14-14, quarterback Tim Tebow led the Gators on two fourth-quarter scoring drives culminating in a 27-yard field goal by Jonathan Phillips and the game-sealing touchdown pass to David Nelson with 3:07 remaining. Tebow, the championship game's Most Valuable Player, threw for 231 yards and ran for 109 yards on the ground.
Percy Harvin contributed 122 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while the Florida defense limited Oklahoma to season-low 14 points and stopped two first-half drives inside the 5-yard line.
