MacArthur Bowl Recipients
Biography
Coach Nick Saban and Alabama (13-0) are the recipients of the 2020 NFF MacArthur Bowl National Championship Trophy following the team’s 52-24 victory over Ohio State (7-1) on Jan. 11, 2021, in the College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship before a pandemic-restricted crowd of 14,926 fans at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The 2020 Crimson Tide will be etched alongside the greatest teams in college football history for an unprecedented 10th time overall on the MacArthur Bowl Championship Trophy, which is housed at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
DeVonta Smith, the Heisman-winning wide receiver, led the Tide and claimed Offensive MVP honors. He had 12 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half before he left the game because of a dislocated finger. Alabama quarterback Mac Jones was 36 for 45 for a CFP championship-record 464 yards and five touchdowns. Najee Harris rushed for 158 yards on 29 carries, scoring three times for an SEC record 30 touchdowns this season. Defensive tackle Christian Barmore finished the game with one sack and two tackles for loss, collecting Defensive MVP honors.
With the win, Alabama extends its record by claiming the MacArthur Bowl for an unprecedented 10th time in the school's history. The Crimson Tide won the MacArthur Bowl in 1961, 1978 and 1979 under College Football Hall of Fame head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, in 1992 under Hall of Fame head coach Gene Stallings, and in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and now 2020 under Saban. The win gives Saban, who also won the MacArthur Bowl as the head coach of LSU in 2003, his seventh overall national title, breaking a tie with coach Bryant for the most by a major college coach. A team in the current SEC has now claimed the trophy 19 times.
