Biography

With a résumé that proclaims a young man of exceptional talent and brilliance, Andrew Rodriquez's accomplishments extended well beyond any piece of paper into all realms of student life at Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Va.

A two-year captain and playing both ways at linebacker, running back, fullback, and wide receiver, Rodriquez guided the Cardinals to the runner-up spot in the 2007 Virginia Independent League State Championships while leading the team in pass receiving and scoring and ranking second in rushing, interceptions, tackles for loss, and yards per carry. A four-year starter, he earned First Team accolades at linebacker for three years on the All-State Team and in 2007 on the D.C. Examiner First Team All-Area Team and the Washington Post Second Team All-Met Team. A finalist for the Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year, he was selected by the Fairfax Co. Football Hall of Fame as the Private School Player of the Year. He also earned multiple letters in basketball (two-year captain), track and lacrosse.

In the classroom, he recorded an impressive 4.373 GPA on a 4.0 scale and ranked within the top 10 of his highly competitive class, earning membership in the National Honor Society. He participated in the school's Economics Club and served as an officer in student government.

"Andrew is a humble individual who makes those around him better academically, athletically, and socially," said Bishop Ireton head coach Anthony Verducci. "He is the very best we have to offer... one of our finest students past or present. He always puts his team and classmates ahead of himself in every situation, and by doing so, was an exemplary citizen."

As outstanding leader off the field and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Rodriquez volunteered numerous hours during weekly visits to injured soldiers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and attended the Salesian Leadership Camp.

Standing among our nation’s future military leaders, Andrew Rodriguez cut an outstanding path as one of the most impressive student-athletes to attend West Point en route to becoming the second Campbell Trophy recipient from a military academy.

The Alexandria, Va., native carried a 4.14 GPA as a mechanical engineering major, recording six terms with a GPA of 4.0 or higher.

His performance in the classroom ranked him third in his class of 1,052 cadets. A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District I selection, he earned First-Team Academic All-America accolades in 2011.

A standout on the field, he missed the entire 2010 season due to a potential career-ending back injury, but he returned as a team captain in 2011 to start at outside linebacker.

He finished the season with 59 tackles while leading the team in pass breakups, passes defended and fumble recoveries. Combined with his team leading 85 tackles in 2009, he concluded his career with 144 tackles.

Following his acceptance of the Campbell Trophy, Rodriguez became the 82nd recipient of the James E. Sullivan Award, presented by the Amateur Athletic Union to America’s top amateur athlete.

The son of Commanding General of the U.S. Army Forces Command David Rodriguez, he completed the West Point chain of command detail and was chosen to participate in the West Point Academic Development Program with the U.S. Army in Italy while still at West Point.

He currently serves a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
