Bob and his wife Jean have been recognized as Mr. and Mrs. Mississippi State and their tenure in Starkville, Miss., covers seven decades. Hartley was the first sports information director for the Bulldogs, and he and his wife provided counseling, care and love for many athletes.
 
His love for the Mississippi State community inspired him to open a chapter of the National Football Foundation. Hartley was also a charter member of the Starkville Quarterback Club and the College Football Hall of Fame District Screening Committee. He has been inducted into the Mississippi Sports Writers Hall of Fame as well as the Mississippi State University and the State of Mississippi Halls of Fame.
