Biography
After graduating from Amherst College in Massachusetts in 1902, Boyden became headmaster of the Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass., and he remained there until his retirement in 1968. When he took over, there were only 14 students enrolled and at the time of his retirement, enrollment had climbed to 500 students. An abundance of playing fields were built, and every team was equipped with the latest and best equipment.
In 1962, he was appointed Chairman of Massachusetts Agriculture College (now University of Massachusetts Amherst) and persuaded the legislature to give the school autonomy. A chair, the Frank L. Boyden Professor of Political Economy, exists at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Boyden Hall and Boyden Gym, on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, are named in his honor.
