Biography

After graduating as a football and basketball All-American at Notre Dame, Edward “Moose” Krause coached at St. Mary’s College in Minnesota and then went to Holy Cross as head basketball coach. He returned to his alma mater in 1942 as an assistant football coach with Frank Leahy and assistant to George Keogan in basketball. Krause took over as head basketball coach after Keogan passed away the following year. In 1948, he was named assistant athletics director and took over as athletics director in 1950, a position he held until 1980. In his time as Notre Dame athletics director, 10 new sports achieved varsity status and he handled the establishment of women’s sports starting in 1974.

One of his most cherished awards is his induction into the Knights of Malta, the highest honor a Catholic layman can receive. The City of Hope National medial Center has established the Edward Krause Medical Research Fellowship in his honor, and he was inducted into the South Bend Hall of Fame for his contributions to the South Bend Community School Corporation. Krause was an active supporter of the National Football Foundation and the South Bend chapter of the Foundation is named after him. He passed away on Dec. 11, 1992, at the age of 79.
