Biography

Frank Gitschier’s life in football began at Sharon High School (Pa.) before he accepted a football scholarship to the University of Louisville. He started at quarterback and linebacker all four years for the Cardinals from 1946-49. Gitschier was hired as an assistant coach after graduation and recruited and coached Pro Football Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas. After his coaching days, Gitschier spent 23 years in the FBI.
 
Gitschier, with the help of other individuals, began the Kentucky Chapter of the NFF in 1985 and made an immediate impact, providing over $10,000 a year in scholarships. The chapter also awarded a scholarship to the winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which they presented annually. They also presented money each year to the Pop Warner Little League football leagues of Louisville, Ky. Gitschier passed away on Dec. 7, 2014, at the age of 89.
