Biography

Freeman Belser represents the best in the nation as a student, athlete and leader. Compiling a 3.8 GPA, he served as president of his senior class. He was also voted vice president of his sophomore and junior classes, and was elected as a Heathwood Hall Episcopal (S.C.) Scholar four consecutive years. He was a member of the National Honor Society, a Jefferson Scholar nominee and a winner of the Princeton Book Award.

As a 6-foot-3, 180-pound two-way starter, Belser played tight end and linebacker. He caught 41 passes for 668 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was also the team’s leading tackler with 113 tackles and two sacks. A South Carolina All-State selection at tight end, he also earned all-conference honors as a linebacker. As team co-captain, Belser was the recipient of the squad’s prestigious Hammer Award. Belser was a member of the Multi-Cultural Club and the school’s Attendance and Discipline Committee, and he participated in the Presbyterian College/Wachovia Leadership Program. Belser traveled to Italy, Greece and France as part of school programs.

Belser attended Davidson College, serving as the starting linebacker for the Wildcats for three seasons. He appeared in ten games in the 2000 season, in which Davidson enjoyed their winningest season in program history at 10-0. Belser appeared in every game, and he racked up 61 tackles and three sacks.

Belser graduated with a bachelor’s in history from Davidson, and joined his father’s law firm in Columbia, S.C., in 2004 after earning his J.D. at the University of South Carolina. Forming a powerful link to the next generation of scholar-athletes, Belser currently serves as the president of the NFF Midlands (Columbia, S.C.) Chapter.
