Biography
After graduating from Ohio University in 1922, Galbreath started in the real estate business in Columbus, Ohio, and quickly became one of the world’s great builders. He made a fortune in commercial property development, building skyscrapers all over the country. In 1979, he completed the largest housing project to date in Kawloon, Hong Kong, housing 80,000 people. Galbreath had offices in Columbus, New York City and Pittsburgh.
Galbreath is also well known for his service as the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, a role which he held from 1945-86. In his time, the Pirates won three World Series titles. He was also very involved in horse racing, serving as chairman of the Greater New York Association and vice-president/director of Churchill Downs. Galbreath owned a farm in Kentucky called Darby Dan Farm, which raced several champion horses, including a Kentucky Derby winner and an Epsom Derby winner.
He also served as chairman of the National Football Foundation’s General MacArthur Advisory Committee and sought the College Football Hall of Fame in Columbus. He was very active in the Foundation’s Columbus chapter. Galbreath died weeks before his 91st birthday in Galloway, Ohio, in 1988.
