Biography
Larry Munson was a pioneer in sportscasting with a unique, gravelly voice and unbiased broadcasts that have been widely accepted and considered more authentic. He was most well known for his 42 years of calling football and men’s basketball games for the University of Georgia from 1966-2008. Munson also called Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons games.
A Minneapolis native, Munson attended Minnesota State University Moorhead and played basketball and football for the Dragons. After commencement, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a medic in World War II. When he returned, he spent every cent he had on a radio broadcasting school in Minneapolis.
In 1966, he was hired on to the first broadcast team for the new Atlanta Braves. Munson was in West Palm Beach for spring training and came across an Atlanta Journal article announcing that the Georgia radio announcer position was open. He called to express his interest, and was hired soon after that. Munson called College Football Hall of Famers Bill Stanfill, Jake Scott, Herschel Walker, Terry Hoage, Kevin Butler, Coach Jim Donnan and Coach Vince Dooley. He also called all but two of Georgia’s 13 NFF National Scholar-Athletes, including 1998 William V. Campbell Trophy winner Matt Stinchcomb.
Munson was inducted into the Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. He was also named the Tennessee Sportscaster of the Year five times and the Georgia Sportscaster of the Year four times by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Munson passed away in 2011 at the age of 89.
