Biography

Unlike most chapter presidents, Mark Zeug does not claim a background as a football player. But true to form of every NFF chapter president, Mark Zeug's passion for football has benefited his community for many years.

"Like other sports which I have played, football is a team sport which teaches teamwork and perseverance," said Zeug. "I am a fan and strong supporter of all sports for all people - young and old, male and female, amateur and professional, organized and pick-up. I believe sports provide an outstanding avenue for people to remain physically and mentally active throughout their lives."

Zeug graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., in 1965 with degrees in economics and journalism. Six years later, Zeug earned graduate degrees from the University of Maryland in political science and international relations. He would go on to build a 35-year career in journalism and public relations.

"The primary role of the Hawaii chapter, at present, is the recognition of outstanding scholar-athletes at the high school level. We are the only organization that comparably recognizes and encourages scholarship, athletic proficiency and community service among high school football in the state," said Zeug.

An active participant in the Hawaii football community for multiple decades, Zeug has been a member of the Hawaii Quarterback Club for more than 20 years, and he played an instrumental role in organizing the NFF Hawaii Chapter in 1998. He has previously served as the chapter's secretary, treasurer, banquet coordinator and scholarship administrator. With Zeug's help, the chapter now attracts more than 480 attendees to its annual banquet with a dozen student-athletes honored. In all, the chapter has awarded $120,000 in scholarship awards.

Along with his work with the NFF Hawaii Chapter, Zeug is actively involved in athletics for senior citizens and serves as a track and field official for the Western Athletic Conference. He and his wife, Helene, currently reside in Honolulu.
