On the Gridiron, Barbour was a First Team All San Diego County California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) selection at linebacker as a senior and finished his career as the school record holder in career tackles (458) and most tackles in a single season (166). Named to the All-San Diego County team, and the Grossmont North All-League squad, he also played in the North vs. South County All-Star Classic Football Game.

A four-sport performer, Barbour was selected as a Boy's State Representative, and his class voted him the school's Student Council Vice-President. A participant in the U.S. Naval Academy's 2002 Summer Seminar Program, he is also a basketball official for the La Mesa Community Youth Recreational Services and an active member of the St. Martins Catholic Church.

Mathew played football at Pomona College (Calif.) and was named the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference in tackles. He received his bachelor's in biology from Pomona and his master's in ecology from San Diego State. Barbour is currently a doctorate candidate at the University of British Columbia.
