NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete Award Recipients
Biography
While rushing for more than 3,000 yards and scoring 44 touchdowns in his junior and senior years, Matt DeOrio led Bolles School (Fla.) to two state championships and a 15-0 record while also amassing an impressive 4.2 GPA in the classroom. He also played varsity baseball and basketball, and he was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a Student Council representative. DeOrio was named Most Valuable Player of the Year by the Jacksonville Quarterback Club in 1993, and he was featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” column. The Bolles School twice honored him as both outstanding football player and best all-around athlete.
An Advanced Placement Scholar and a National Merit Finalist, DeOrio was a member of the National Honor and Spanish Honor Societies, and he received the prestigious Mayo Foundation Scholarship Award.
DeOrio rushed for 117 yards on 22 carries with 69 receiving yards and a touchdown in four seasons at Duke University. He is now an orthopedic surgeon in Huntsville, Ala.
