NFF Chapter Leadership Award Recipients
Biography
A longtime supporter of the University of Wyoming and athletics in general throughout the state, Mike Schutte has played a key role in the success of the Wyoming Chapter.
Despite the fact that he lived in California at the time, Schutte became a charter member of the Wyoming Chapter in 1994, before moving closer to Wyoming in 1999. The following year, Schutte was named chapter president and, under his guidance, the Wyoming Chapter currently thrives as one of the fastest growing in the country.
A native of Greybull, Wyoming, Schutte attended the University of Wyoming on a football scholarship, where he played halfback and safety for College Football Hall of Fame Coach Bob Devaney. Schutte graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business as an accounting major.
Upon graduating, Schutte held several sales positions, before becoming associated with the Wyoming Technical Institute in Laramie in 1971 as their national admissions director. In 1975 he became president and acquired 100% ownership of the school in 1978.
On January 1, 1986 he sold Wyoming Tech to a fortune "500" company in New York, remaining two years as the CEO before retiring to San Diego at the age of 45.
Schutte has served as president of the Laramie Chamber of Commerce, Laramie Quarterback Club, Laramie Youth Baseball and Laramie Country Club. He co-founded the Cowboy Joe Club and the University of Wyoming booster club, which now raises over $1 million a year. Active within the state, Schutte's experience includes roles on several boards and advisory councils and an appointment by the governor for a six-year term on the University of Wyoming's board of trustees.
Mike and his wife Karen currently reside in a log home in the mountains of Northern Colorado while staying very active with charitable causes in Laramie and Wyoming. They have four sons and eight grandchildren.
