Biography

Robert Shirley graduated with an outstanding 4.09 GPA, and he ranked first in his Buffalo Gap High School (Va.) class. A member of the National Honor Society, Shirley was selected by the school faculty to attend Boy’s State during the 1998 summer and the New Generation Leadership Seminar prior to his senior year. He was named Geometry Student of the Year, Computer Keyboarding Student of the Year, and he was a member of the Superintendent’s List four straight years.

At 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Shirley was a two-way football standout at quarterback and defensive back. He earned first team all-district and all-region honors on both offense and defense. He was first team all-state as defensive back, and he was recognized all-county and all-city Defensive Player of the Year. He earned first team all-area honors from the Daily News-Record. He was very active in volunteer services, serving as board of directors member of B.A.D.

After attending Carson-Newman College (Tenn.), Shirley became a State Farm agent in Staunton, Va.
