NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete Award Recipients
Biography
Tommy Rhyne was the consummate scholar-athlete at Westlake High School (Texas). In the classroom, he compiled a 3.72 GPA, and he was one of the most honored students in school history. His numerous academic honors include National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, Motorola Merit Scholarship, John McMullen Dean’s Scholar, Who’s Who Among U.S. High School Students, Colorado School of Mines Medal of Achievement in Math and Science, Alamo Sports Extra Scholar-Athlete Award, Westlake High School Achievement Award in Advanced Mathematics, University of Texas Applied Research Laboratory Apprenticeship and Summa cum Laude from Latin Junior Classical League. An offensive tackle for the football team, the 6-foot-3, 274-pound Rhyne led his school to a 27-2-1 record as a junior and senior. The Chaparrals ranked third in the nation in December of 1994 before losing in the Texas Class 5A State Championship game. Rhyne was also involved in extracurricular activities, including the Academic Decathalon Team, tutoring, the Latin Club, the Literary Criticism Team and an Allen Shivers Cancer Center volunteer.
