Campbell Trophy® Summit Shifts to 2021

A Legacy of Inspiring Others to do Great Things

IRVING, Texas (May 19, 2020) – During the past three years, a special football community has taken root in Silicon Valley, and the Fourth Annual National Football Foundation (NFF) Campbell Trophy Summit, sponsored by Intuit, was scheduled to take place Aug. 13-15 at Stanford University. Like virtually every other aspect of life in 2020, the Summit had to change course because of the COVID-19 pandemic. (Click here for a recap video of the 2019 event.)

Organizers plan to resume the annual event in August of 2021 with more than 400 participants, or double the number of attendees in 2019. The event aims to help the past nominees for the William V. Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda and the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards Presented by Fidelity Investments with their leadership skills and career growth. The event serves as a tribute to Bill Campbell, the award's namesake who passed away in 2016, and his legendary reputation for mentoring our nation's top business executives.

"People, who were heavily influenced by Bill Campbell, are honored to pay it forward in the same way Bill inspired them," said MWF Advisors CEO Mark Flynn, co-chairman of the Summit and a successful private equity investor who played linebacker at Saint John's (MN) and coached an eighth-grade boys-and-girls' flag-football team with Bill Campbell for 13 years. "Bill made it his life's work to positively impact the lives of other people, so our goal with the Summit is carrying on that tradition.

"We share the ideas that Bill espoused with these extraordinary individuals nominated for the Campbell Trophy®, so they can carry Bill's lessons forward in their own lives and continue to do great things. One sees Bill's spirit in these young men, and it provides one great hope."

Campbell, who played and coached football at Columbia before an unlikely career switch to the business world, became one of the most influential individuals in Silicon Valley, using the lessons of the gridiron to mentor Steve Jobs of Apple, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Sundar Pichai and Eric Schmidt of Google, Scott Cook and Brad Smith of Intuit, John Doerr of Kleiner-Perkins, Dick Costolo at Twitter, Diane Greene of VMWare and countless others. His contributions were recently captured in a new book titled "The Trillion Dollar Coach."

Seventy-six top business leaders have donated their time to speak and mentor during the first three years, and the event has attracted 285 former nominees with 100 of them returning as repeat attendees, or a 67 percent return rate. (See below for a full list of past speakers and participants.) Taking place over three days, the Summit is open to all Campbell Trophy® nominees from all divisions of play, and representatives of 171 schools have participated thus far, including student-athletes from 58 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions, six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and seven Ivy League schools. The nominees have traveled from Finland, Japan, Tanzania, England, Canada, 44 states, and the District of Columbia, and their careers have ranged from doctors, engineers, lawyers, physicists, actors, film producers and business and civic leaders.

Intuit, the financial, accounting, and tax preparation software company where Campbell served as CEO and then chairman for more than two decades, has taken on the key role as the sole sponsor of the event. Realizing the extraordinary potential of the trophy nominees, the company stepped forward to make the event absolutely free, including all accommodations, meals and a $400 travel stipend for those in need of assistance. Brad Smith, Campbell's protégée and successor at Intuit, serves as co-chairman of the event, and he has spoken at all three events.

"In three short years, the Campbell Trophy® Summit has been transformed into one of the must-attend-events in the country," said Smith. "And I promise you that is not a statement of hyperbole. We have had countless people ask how they can buy a ticket to attend, and that's what makes this event so special, you can't buy your way in. You can get here only one way: you have to earn it."

Each college in the country is allowed one nomination per year for the Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda, and the requirements include a 3.2 GPA or better and for the student-athlete to be a significant contributor on the team in their final year of eligibility. Covering every college and university from all divisions of play, the nomination process effectively creates a pool of the best student-athletes from each school in the nation who are then invited to attend the Summit.

"We are so proud of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete program and the Campbell Trophy®, which is the crown jewel of our scholarship program," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "The Summit has become a powerful platform to showcase all the great nominees while providing us a vehicle for mentoring them and subsequently sending them out into the workforce with many of the tools and concepts that Bill Campbell used to influence so many people. This is a great way for those who loved Bill and the great game of football to pay it forward."

The Summit is open to all former nominees for the Campbell Trophy®, which has been presented since 1990, and the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards, which have been bestowed since 1959. The approach of inviting all the past nominees stretching back to 1959 has created a unique community of recent college graduates as well as professionals in the middle of their careers and retirees who can serve as mentors.

Joe Romig, one of only 38 individuals ever honored as both an NFF National Scholar-Athlete and a College Football Hall of Fame inductee, learned about the Summit from 1992 Campbell Trophy® winner Jim Hansen. Both played at Colorado albeit at different times, Romig in the early 1960s and Hansen in the early 1990s, and they both earned recognition, not only from the NFF, but as Rhodes Scholars. At 78, Romig, who holds a Ph.D. in astrogeophysics and studies fires and explosions, earned the distinction as the oldest nominee to have attended the event last year.

"Right now, I am in the fourth quarter and that's when the game is won or lost, so I want to have a strong fourth quarter," said Romig. "All of these people, regardless of their age, all of them are smart and they have an expanded perspective of the world, and you want to take advantage of that… The world is changing fast and we have lots of new information and new ways to get that information and new thoughts… There is plenty to take away from the lectures and interaction because you're interacting with people over a course of 60 years.

"The conference was valuable not only because of the talks but particularly because of the interaction with the attendees. I learned a lot from the younger people and then they got a perspective of the history from me… It's a great conference, and we all have a lot in common, which is academics and football… Scheduling permitting, it will be important for me to be there every year in August."

Terry Baggett, a 2014 Campbell Trophy® finalist from Army West Point, attended the inaugural Summit in 2017 and returned in 2019. A captain overseeing three platoons with 150 soldiers in a Stryker Infantry Company, Baggett's military duties prohibited him from attending in 2018, but the August event holds a firm place on his calendar.

Baggett speaks at least once a month to Dan Alberti, a partner with the McDermott Will & Emery law firm in Menlo Park, California, and a past speaker at the Summit. Alberti's son Ryan, who played college football at Princeton, served in the Army with Baggett. The connection helped solidify a special bond between Baggett and the older Alberti who now serves as a key mentor to Baggett, regularly providing him guidance on his plans for work after his military service.

"The Summit reiterates why football matters because all those lessons you learn in the game translate into success in the real world," said Baggett. "You have to be able to apply knowledge, and the Summit shows you how business people use those same lessons to be successful.... Being a Campbell finalist was the most rewarding part of playing college football because I have not played for five years but it continues to pay dividends. The Summit continues to reward you for the work you put it in."

The event has attracted individuals from a wide range of professions, including numerous doctors who naturally gravitate to orthopedics with their football backgrounds. Craig Mahoney, a 1990 NFF National Scholar-Athlete from Iowa State and an orthopedic surgeon in Des Moines, Iowa, has attended the past two events.

"We had a great roundtable discussion with the kids who are going to medical school," said Mahoney. "We're able to support these kids who are extremely talented, and they're able to talk to people who have walked down the pathway, and it's great for me because it still keeps me close to the game and the kids playing the game. It's just a great way to stay involved.

"The Summit is one of the biggest advocacy events for college football," added Mahoney, who joined his local NFF Iowa Chapter in 2003 and became president of the outpost in 2016. "How does [the college athletic community] bring together these talented athletic and academically motivated individuals, and that's the Summit. They're just good people, and you like being with them… You can go to a social event, and you have the background of college football and motivated people in the same room. To have that many likeminded and talented people together is unbelievable."

Activities at the event have included leadership workshops, a career expo, team-building activities, a physical and mental competition dubbed the "Campbell Championship Series," a dinner cruise of San Francisco Bay and several other activities designed to build relationships. The panels have explored a wide range of topics designed to foster leadership and career development. All three years, College Football Hall of Fame inductees Ronnie Lott (USC) and 1983 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Steve Young (BYU) have participated in a Hall of Fame panel, and the past two years Liz Wiseman, the author of The New York Times bestseller "Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter" has conducted an impactful session with breakout groups.

Hoping to expand the Summit's impact, organizers launched the "Campbell Trophy Mentor Challenge," this year which has encouraged attendees to continue Bill's legacy of mentoring by volunteering with a local community-based organization after returning to their local communities. The initiative has attracted 20 participants who have volunteered in various roles, including with the Boys & Girls Club; Big Brothers Big Sisters; the Ronald McDonald House; tutoring journalism students; and as youth football coaches.

"We at the National Football Foundation try to do the right thing to protect the game, and Mark Flynn came to us, saying we can make a difference. We can add a new chapter, putting together the Summit and putting the wind in its sails," said Hatchell. "And Brad Smith said I'll go shoulder-to-shoulder with you, and I'll walk every step with you, and I'll make it work. So, for three years, this wonderful, spectacular event, which defines college football in the very best way is because of these two people, so thank you."

The captain of Columbia's 1961 Ivy League championship team, Bill Campbell found his true calling after an unlikely career change at age 39 from football coach to advertising executive. His ability to recruit, develop and manage talented executives – all lessons learned on the gridiron –  proved to be a critical component of his ability to inspire his business teams to the highest levels of success.

Campbell joined the NFF Board in 1978 while he was still a coach at Columbia, and he continued to serve with distinction until his passing in 2016. In 2004, the NFF recognized Campbell's contributions and accomplishments by presenting him with the NFF Gold Medal, the organization's highest honor. In 2009, the NFF renamed college football's premier scholar-athlete award as The William V. Campbell Trophy® in his honor.

Celebrating the 31st presentation in 2020 as one of college football's most sought after and competitive awards, the trophy identifies one individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership. Made of 25-pounds of bronze and 24-inches in height, the trophy is currently displayed at its official home inside the New York Athletic Club and accompanied by a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship. Mazda serves as the presenting sponsor of the Campbell Trophy®.

The Campbell Trophy® was first presented in 1990 and serves as the centerpiece to the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards, which were launched in 1959 as the first initiative in history to award postgraduate scholarships based on a player's combined academic, athletic and leadership accomplishments. The program has awarded $11.7 million to 866 top athletes since its inception, and it currently distributes around $300,000 each year. Fidelity Investments serves as the presenting sponsor of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards. Coupled with the money distributed by its local chapters, the NFF has awarded more than $33 million in scholarships.
