Arnett "Ace" Mumford graduated from Wilberforce in 1924 and started his college coaching career that fall. He was head coach at Jarvis 1924-26, Bishop 1927-29, Texas College 1931-35, and Southern University 1936-42, 1944-61. He won six Black College National Championships--at Texas College in 1935 and at Southern in 1948, 1949, 1950, 1954, and 1960. His record at Southern was 169-52-14. His record for all 26 years was 233-85-23, a percentage of .717. He had a 38-game undefeated streak at Southern from 1948-51. He was a winner, and he was equally known for his concern for his players' education. He stressed academics in talks to his team. In 23 years at Southern he won 11 championships in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Mumford died in 1962 at age 64.
