Wayne "Double L" Millner was a hero in two spectacular Notre Dame victories. In 1933, Notre Dame had won only two of its first eight games and was playing unbeaten Army. Notre Dame trailed 12-6 with one minute to play. With his famous teammate, Moose Krause, clearing the way for him, Millner blocked an Army punt and recovered it for a touchdown. Notre Dame won 13-12. In 1935, both Notre Dame and Ohio State were unbeaten, and they met in a clash that would be voted the best football game of the half-century, 1901- 1950. Notre Dame trailed 13-0 and scored three late touchdowns to win 18-13. The final Notre Dame touchdown was a pass from Bill Shakespeare to Millner with 32 seconds left. Millner served four years in World War II. Then he became an assistant coach in the pros and even had one year, 1951, as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. When he died at age 63 in 1976, he was still in football, scouting for the Washington Redskins.
