Jack Harding was an outstanding athlete before he may have even thought of devoting most of his life to the coaching profession. At Pittsburgh, Harding played football for Glenn "Pop" Warner and Jock Sutherland, captaining the Panther eleven, and also led the Pitt basketball and baseball squads in the same capacity. Harding, a native of Avoca, Pennsylvania, coached at Scranton University from 1926 until 1936, compiling a 49-37-9 record there, paving the way to a head coaching job at the University of Miami, Fla. With the Hurricanes, Harding chalked up a 54-32-3 slate until 1948, when he became the Athletic Director for the Coral Gables campus. He served as the AD for the Hurricanes until his death in 1963, and was responsible for scheduling such powers as Notre Dame, Syracuse, Michigan State, and Alabama. His 103-69-12 overall career record was remarkable considering the quality of the opposition his teams faced.
