A consensus All-America choice in 1928, "Peter the Great" was big, strong, swift and aggressive. Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne saw him as a one-man gang. After Tech had upset the Irish, 13-0, in a 1928 battle, Rockne waxed praise over Pund's performance, saying: "I watched a magnificent Notre Dame team that seemed headed for its annual victory over Georgia Tech suddenly recoil before the furious pounding of one man - Pund, center. Nobody could stop him. I counted 20 scoring plays that this man ruined." Indeed, Pund was the rock upon which Tech built stellar success in 1928. The Yellow Jackets finished the regular season at 9-0 and went on to defeat California, 8-7, in the Rose Bowl game that featured Cal's Roy Riegels' famous wrong-way run. Long after his playing days had ended, Pund was hailed as a football superstar. He was named to the All-1920s Team, joining such greats as George Gipp, Red Grange, Ernie Nevers and Bennie Oosterbaan in selection by a national board of sportswriters. Pund retired from football following the Rose Bowl victory over Cal and went on to distinguish himself as a top executive officer in the shipping department of Bethlehem Steel Corporation.
