Harley Sewell was a star wherever he played. At one time, he was an offensive guard for Texas. Then he played both ways and was middle guard on defense. The 1952 Texas team beat Tennessee 16-0 in the Cotton Bowl. Sewell was named Defensive Most Valuable Player. He led a defense that held Tennessee to six first downs and to minus 14 yards rushing. Texas was the Southwest Conference champion in 1950 and 1952 with Sewell in the lineup. Sewell played 11 years in the National Football League for the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles. He settled in Arlington, Texas, and worked as a scout for the Rams.
