He was only 17 years old when he arrived on the Georgia Tech campus, a 6-4, 220-pound freshman. Davis stepped right into the varsity lineup. This phenomenal freshman combined foot speed to tracking down enemy runners and unusual strength to wrestle them to the turf. As a senior in 1947, Davis played one of his finest games for the Yellowjackets as they defeated Duke, 7-0. That day, Davis stopped four Duke scoring threats, twice nailing the ball carrier inside the Tech 5-yard line. His coach, Bobby Dodd, said, "His tackle play was the finest I saw in any game." Duke coach Wallace Wade agreed, calling Davis, "a truly great tackle". Davis was a four-year starter for Tech, winning All- Southeastern Conference honors in each of his three final seasons and claiming All-America laurels as a senior. After graduation, Davis played pro ball for the Boston Yanks before entering the Army. He later became president of the Dixie Yarns textile business in Chattanooga, Tenn.
