Bobby Marshall played end for Minnesota 1904-06. The Gophers went 13-0, 10-1, 4-1 in those years. The total record was 27-2, and Minnesota out-scored its opponent 1238-63. A 1905 Walter Camp All-America selection, in 1906 Marshall kicked a field goal to beat Chicago 4-2 (field goals counted 4 points). He was the first African American to play football in the Big Nine (later the Big Ten). He also played first base on the college baseball team, lettered in track, and was a star in hockey and boxing. He graduated in 1907 and played with Minneapolis pro teams, the Deans and the Marines. From 1920 through 1924 he played in the National Football League with Duluth, and Rock Island. He retired from football at age 44 but came back six years later to participate in an exhibition game at Nicollet Park, Minneapolis. Marshall took a job as a grain inspector for the state of Minnesota; he retired in 1950. He was born March 12, 1880, in Milwaukee, moved to Minneapolis and attended Central High, and died August 27, 1958. He was inducted posthumously into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1971. At ceremonies during halftime of a Minnesota game, he was represented by his widow, his son Donald, and his daughter Betty.
