When Doug Dickey took over the University of Tennessee football program in 1964, it had been eight years since the Vols had enjoyed their last eight-win season. In six seasons at UT, his teams won eight or more games five consecutive times after his initial 4-5-1 season. Dickey brought to his program players such as Hall of Famers Steve Kiner, Bob Johnson, and Steve DeLong. In 1967, he led his team to a number two national ranking. After rejuvenating the Tennessee program, Dickey returned to his alma mater and took the head job at the University of Florida. His success continued as he led the Gators to a 7-4 record. In his nine-year tenure at Florida, he won 58 games and earned four bowl appearances. After four years in business, he returned to Tennessee and served 18 years as athletic director. His abilities as an administrator earned him the National Football Foundation's John Toner Award.
