Arthur Poe was a gridiron gremlin, much in the style of the mischievous characters which came to life in the writings of his great uncle, Edgar Allan Poe. The family was famous in Princeton gridiron lore, for Arthur was one of six Poe brothers to star for the Orange and Black and one of two to make All- America selection. Poe saved his most devilish tricks for rival Yale teams, and few Eli followers forgot the tiny but testy 146- pound Princeton end. For example, in the opening half of the 1898 Princeton-Yale game, Art scooped up an Eli fumble and raced 95 yards for the only touchdown of the game. The next year, Poe attempted the first drop-kick field goal of his collegiate career, sent it true through the uprights and beat Yale again, this time 11-10. The Tigers lost only one game during those two campaigns, a 5-0 decision to Cornell in 1899. The Tigers of Old Nassau captured the National Championship in 1898. Poe, small but indomitable and spirited, earned All- America acclaim in each of those years. He was the master of the big play, an arch opportunist. In the same season that he turned the Yale bobble into a Tiger victory, he also logged an 80-yard TD run to beat Navy and a 40-yard romp to help topple Brown.
