It was the 1931 season when Bill Morton and the Dartmouth team traveled to meet Yale, an old nemesis the Big Green had never been able to beat. Another Dartmouth defeat seemed certain until in the final minute of play, "Air Mail" Morton delivered a 33-yard field goal which produced a 33-33 tie. Quarterback Morton's natural abilities and imagination provided many other dramatic moments for Dartmouth fans. Against Cornell, Morton fielded a Big Red punt and, in one fluid motion, punted the ball back over the heads of the surprised enemy. The Big Green went on to win, 14-0, handing Cornell its only loss in 1931. Morton received All- America acclaim in both football and ice hockey, blending his athletic endeavors with a broad range of campus leadership activities. Following graduation, Morton formed his own investment firm and, subsequently, became president of the American Express Company. He served his alma mater as chairman of its athletic council and, later, trustee. He received an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree from Dartmouth in 1982. The National Football Foundation awarded him its Gold Medal in 1986. Morton died in 1987, just a few days after a new dormitory was dedicated in his name at Dartmouth.
