Coach Joe Thompson was building the Pitt Panthers into a fine-tuned unit when Hube Wagner first arrived on campus in 1910. Wagner had been hailed as one of Pennsylvania's most versatile football players while performing at Monaca High School, but few Pitt fans knew what a well-rounded athlete the young man really was. He wasted little time in showing them. Hube made the varsity as a freshman, playing end on one of the all-time great Panther teams. Pitt went undefeated through a nine-game schedule that season, scoring 282 points. Not once did an opponent cross the Panther goal and Pitt frustrated great teams such as Notre Dame, Penn State, the famous Carlisle Indians, Navy, Cornell, West Virginia, and Bucknell. Panther fans roared at the sight of their favorite freshman, Wagner, as he displayed an incredibly wild tackling style and some of the most powerful ball-carrying of the campaign. Because of Hube's ability to play virtually any position, coach Thompson developed his "Monaca Mauler" into an outstanding utility man. Although Wagner was primarily an end, coach Thompson used him at every position except quarterback. When Pitt's fortunes dipped through the next 3 seasons, Wagner's star continued to rise. He captained the 1913 team and made All-American.
