John Elway set formidable records for touchdown passes. He set Stanford marks for most TD passes in a game, 6, most in a season, 27, and most in a career, 77. His TD passes were 6 in 1979, 27 in 1980, 20 in 1981, and 24 in 1982. The 1980 figure was third in the nation. The 1982 figure led the nation. In four years, Elway completed 774 passes for 9,349 yards. In 1980 and 1982 he was Player of the Year in the Pac-10 Conference. In 1982 he was a unanimous All-America, second in the Heisman Trophy vote, winner of the Pop Warner Award as the best senior player on the west coast. The NCAA named him to its Top Five Award for all sports. Elway also played on the Stanford baseball team. He stood 6 feet 4, weighed 202 pounds. He came to Stanford from Grenada Hills High School in Northridge, California. Elway played in the NFL with the Denver Broncos 1983-98 and led them to two Super Bowl championships.
