Dexter Very was Penn State's starting right end in every game for four years 1909-1912. Penn State was undefeated in 1909, 1911 and 1912 and lost two games in 1910. Very was captain in 1911 and made a touchdown against Pennsylvania by snatching the ball from the grasp of a Penn player, Ray Mercer. Penn State won that game 22-6, its first victory over Penn in 18 years. In 1912 Very scored nine touchdowns in eight games. He carried the ball 17 times on end-around plays, averaging 13.8 yards. He returned 12 kickoffs, averaging 20 yards. And he caught passes from Pete Mauthe and Eugene "Shorty" Miller. Very never wore headgear. He was also on Penn State's wrestling team. After college he worked as a manufacturer's representative in Pittsburgh and was a football official. He officiated the Rose Bowl game of January 1, 1933. Very was born November 27, 1889, in Fairdale, Pennsylvania; he died in 1980 at age 90.
