Steve Suhey, a 5-11, 205-pounder, grew up in Cazenovia, New York. After winning All-America honors as a guard at Penn State in 1947, he was the toast of his hometown. More than 300 friends and admirers gathered to pay homage at a community banquet - and Suhey, who had "thumbed" his way home for the testimonial, returned to his studies at Penn State in a shiny new car presented to him by the people of Cazenovia. In looking back on his college career, interrupted by three years of service in the Air Corps during World War II, Suhey said that Penn State's 1947 team was easily the best he had ever played for. He nominated Navy's Dick Scott as "the toughest man" he ever played against. Ironically, the future All-America said he was beaten to a pulp physically and mentally after that game and thought he would never amount to much after that. Steve Suhey later played with the Pittsburgh Steelers and then coached high school football before joining the L.G. Balfour Company as a jewelry and yearbook salesman. Married and the father of seven children, Steve Suhey died in 1977 at the age of 55. Three of his sons - Larry, Paul, and Matt - won football letters at Penn State from 1975-1979.
