Edwin "Goat" Hale got his nickname playing for Central High School of Jackson, Mississippi, against Brookhaven in 1914. He battered through the line, scoring a touchdown, and ran past the end zone until his head hit a wooden building, loosening several planks. He was a halfback at Mississippi College in 1915-16, again in 1920-21. Between these terms he was in World War I. He was wounded, reported missing, and found later in a hospital in France. In his time Mississippi College played major teams, going 3-0 against Mississippi, 3- 1 against Tulane, 1-3 against Mississippi State, 0-2 against Alabama, 0-2 against Louisiana State. In 1915 Hale played for a Hall of Fame coach, Dana Bible. His team beat Tulane 20-6 and Mississippi 74-0. In 1921 Hale scored 23 touchdowns and drop-kicked 23 extra points. Hale played pro baseball two years, then served as assistant coach for Mississippi, Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi, Mississippi College and Millsaps. He was chief recruiter at Mississippi for Harry Mehre, and recruited three future Hall of Famers - Barney Poole, Doug Kenna and Charlie Conerly. After Hale's senior playing season at Mississippi College, the school dropped its nickname, "Collegians." A new name, "Choctaws," was voted by students.
