Herb Sturhahn grew up in Long Island, New York, and first flashed his incredible abilities at the highly-respected New York Military Academy where he excelled in a variety of sports. Those schoolboy days proved an omen, for Sturhahn headed off to Yale and starring performances in football, hockey, track and golf. On the gridiron, "Cobbles" proved to be a feared lineman blessed with quickness and finely-toned strength. He struck from the line with lightning speed and leveled opposing players with ease. As a sophomore in 1924, Sturhahn entered the season as a starter and played an important role in Yale's defensive success which limited Eli opponents to only 52 points while posting a 6-0-2 record, including ties with Dartmouth (14-14) and Army (7-7). In his junior year, Sturhahn claimed national recognition when Walter Camp named him to his All-America squad after Yale had finished 5-2-1. Sturhahn lettered in each of his three varsity seasons and climaxed his career with repeat All-America laurels in 1926. Upon leaving the halls of Yale, Herb became an insurance broker in Princeton, New Jersey where he remained active in civic and community affairs until his death in 1979.
