Big, fast and durable, Jack Hubbard was one of football's authentic Iron Men. The Amherst star played in every game through four seasons. Hubbard distinguished himself in 1905, by becoming one of the handful of small college players ever to make Walter Camp's All-America selection. Hubbard began his career as a halfback at Amherst in 1903, but was noted for ease in adjusting to virtually any position. At 180 pounds, he was classified as a "big back" for those days, and he carried both speed and strength. A dash and hurdles man, Hubbard employed his track talents as advantages when smashing through a line, skirting end or gliding off tackle. An excellent kicker, he never missed a point-after-touchdown in three straight seasons. Hubbard was highly applauded for his ball- carrying abilities but, like so many players, saw himself as a better defensive player. He believed his defense earned him Camp's All-America enrollment. Following graduation, "Old Hatfield" spent 46 years in the fishing food manufacturing and hardware businesses in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
