It was New Year's, 1919, and the annual Tournament of Roses theme was "Victorious Peace", capturing the mood of the nation at the end of World War I. A pair of powerful military teams from the Great Lakes Naval Station and Mare Island Marine Base were about to meet in the Rose Bowl. John "Paddy" Driscoll, a Great Lakes player with All-America credentials at Northwestern, was about to excite the crowd with an incredible performance. The darting little halfback, nicknamed "The Wasp", did it all for Great Lakes. He caught a touchdown pass, drop-kicked a 30-yard field goal and threw a TD strike to George Halas (later the founder of the Chicago Bears). The result - Great Lakes rolled to victory, 17-0. In 1916, Driscoll had starred for the Northwestern Wildcats, serving as captain and leading the team to a 6-1 record. Driscoll garnered his All-America acclaim that season and continued his performances during his military career.
