Imagine a 155-pound guard blasting holes through such concrete blocks as Army, Navy, Georgia Tech, Southern Cal, and Pittsburgh. Imagine Bert Metzger stopping them cold. In his last two years, Notre Dame shut out seven opponents, held eight more to 7 points or less, and finished 9-0-0 in 1929 and 10-0-0 in 1930. With Metzger pulling out and leading interference with aggressive skill and determination, the Fighting Irish ran up 410 points to opponents' 112 in those two years. They won, and retired, the Rissman Trophy which in those days honored the national championship team. Metzger's contributions to this remarkable Knute Rockne record were cited with an array of All-America honors that included Associated Press, United Press and three other first team selections. After college, Metzger coached the offensive line at Catholic University for one season, then went into sales and became sales manager of Bowman Dairy in Chicago.
