Terry Kinard had great statistics at free safety for Clemson. He had 17 interceptions, 30 pass deflections, and 292 tackles. In 1979, he made two interceptions in Clemson's 16-10 victory over Notre Dame. In 1981, he led the team in tackles and was consensus All-America as Clemson won the national championship. The Tigers went 12-0; the final game was a 22-15 victory over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. In 1982, he was team captain, unanimous All-America, and was named Defensive Player of the Year by CBS and Chevrolet. He was Most Valuable Player in the Senior Bowl. More honors came his way. USA Today named him to its all-decade team of the 1980's. Sports Illustrated picked him on its all-century team. Kinard played pro eight years with the New York Giants and Houston Oilers. After football he went into management levels with Burger King. Kinard started his college career in 1978. He suffered a separated shoulder in the first game and missed the rest of the season. The NCAA waived the season and granted him four more years of eligibility.
