Mal Kutner was a complete athlete, who's frame and talents made the perfect football end. At 6-2 and 190 pounds he had size and muscle. But Kutner was more than that. He was extremely versatile. A top letterman in basketball and track as well as football, Kutner could leap gazelle-like to grab in a lofty pass, and then turn on the blazing speed to out-run opposing defenders. So talented was this Longhorn lineman that coach Dana X. Bible never ran out of ways to utilize Kutner's abilities. Bible used Kutner at end, tackle and halfback during Kutner's three years in Austin, and the results were always the same - outstanding success. Kutner led the Longhorns in receiving as a junior, hauling in 16 aerials for 237 yards while helping the Burnt Orange and White to an 8-2-0 record in 1940. The following year, Kutner was named All- Southwest Conference and All-America as the `Horns finished 8-1-1. After graduation, Kutner played for the Navy Pre- Flight teams, then turned pro following his World War II tour of duty. Once again, he was an instant star, winning Rookie of the Year honors with the Chicago Cardinals in 1946. The next year, Kutner led the Cardinals to the World Championship and, in 1948, was the NFL's Most Valuable Player.
