He had no football background prior to coming to Michigan, yet Francis "Whitey" Wistert would become the first of three brothers who would draw All-America recognition as Wolverines and the first of three brothers to be enshrined in the National Football Foundation's Hall of Fame. Brothers Albert, who played 1940-1941, and Alvin, who played 1947-1949, are also Hall of Fame enshrinees. Once Whitey decided to give football a try he had to be the best at his position. Keen, quick and accurate at diagnosing plays, Wistert rapidly matured into a mainstay of Michigan's unbeaten 1933 eleven. The Wolverines were 7-0-1 that season, their perfection marred by a scoreless battle with Big Ten rival Minnesota. Whitey, at 6-2 and 210-pounds, drew national acclaim as a senior on that incredible gridiron crew. He excelled in other sports, as well, earning baseball letters during three seasons at Michigan. Following graduation, Wistert played five years of professional baseball before entering a career as a New York attorney. He later became vice-president of a Toledo, Ohio, industrial relations firm. During World War II, he served as a Navy lieutenant.
