Ellery Huntington was a tenacious little quarterback with an uncanny ability to befuddle enemy defenses. He became Colgate's first All-American when he made Walter Camp's national listing in 1913. The honor highlighted a career which established Huntington as a marvel of his team, a player with rare instinct for the game and uninhibited courage on the field. He returned a kickoff 85 yards against Syracuse. Huntington was a Phi Beta Kappa, class president, and went on to a law degree at Harvard. He served in both World War I and II; in the latter war he was head of the U.S. military mission to Yugoslavia's Marshal Tito. He was head coach at Colgate 1920-21 and in 1940 wrote a book, "50 years of Colgate Football." Huntington was born March 11, 1893, in Nashville, Tennessee; he died in 1987 at age 94.
