Doug Kenna excelled in football, basketball, tennis and track at Mississippi's Jackson Central High School, winning All- State acclaim. After his freshman year at Ole Miss, he received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy. Not surprisingly, he was considered one of the finest athletes at West Point. Kenna played quarterback and halfback for Colonel Earl "Red" Blaik's Black Knights of the Hudson and, though hampered by a knee injury, the 5-11, 180-pounder was a great clutch player as Blaik launched his great Army teams of the 1940s. After helping post a 9-0 record in 1944, Kenna won All-America honors as the quarterback for the National Champion Cadets. But football was not his only sport. A guard on the Army basketball team, he helped put together a winning streak of 27 games over the 1944 and 1945 seasons. And in 1945, he captained the Army tennis team which compiled an 11-0 record. His senior year alone, Kenna played for teams which won 34 contests and lost just one. In addition, he was named an All-America in basketball. After a tour of duty in Germany, Kenna returned to West Point where he served as one of Blaik's assistant coaches. In 1949 he left the Army and, since then, has held key executive positions and served as president of various companies.
